Brown Water Snake

Brown water snakes are light tan with darker brown squares on the back, giving a checkerboard appearance (as opposed to the puzzle piece appearance of Burmese pythons). The belly is light colored with darker blotches and half moon shapes.

 


Brown Water Snake Nerodia taxispilota. Fairly common in southeastern portion of Coastal Plain. Most frequently encountered in streams and stream impoundments.

Look For: A brown water snake with a yellow stripe on each side and 4 brown stripes on yellow belly.
Length: 15-36".
Habitat: Shallow rocky streams with crayfish.

These help separate Cottonmouth from the common and non-poisonous (but mean-tempered) Water Snakes (Nerodia spp.), particularly the flat-headed Brown Water Snake (N. taxispilota) of the Coastal Plain.
