Buffalo Name commonly applied to the American bison incorrectly. But given to certain related oxlike mammals of Asia and Africa. The asiatic water buffalo or Indian buffalo stands 5 ft. or more at the shoulder.

A buffalo's habitat varies. They live primarily on plains, prairies, river valleys and sometimes forests. Free ranging buffalo occur only in national parks and reserves such as Yellowstone and Custer.

Cape Buffalo
The Cape Buffalo is a large, hoofed mammal that lives on the African savanna. This plant-eater usually lives in large herds of up to a thousand animals. Some herds consist of only males, others consist only of females and their young.

Buffaloes can live in herds of a few hundred, but have been known to congregate in thousands in the Serengeti during the rainy season. The females and their offspring make up the bulk of the herd. Males may spend much of their time in bachelor groups.

Buffalos are considered nocturnal, but can also be seen during the day. They typically spend about 5 to 10.5 hours each day hunting for food. It is not uncommon for a herd of buffalos to travel 17 mi (27 km) for food and water during the dry season.

Buffalo hunting and their dangerous nature when wounded has been documented by all the great white hunters and on various video footage. DO NOT BE FOOLED - each situation is unique and buffalo are one of the most dangerous animals when wounded.

Buffalo are abundant in much of Minnesota and are in no danger of overharvest. Ditching and draining for farmlands, which eliminated shallow lakes, may have reduced bigmouth buffalo populations in the first half of the 20th century.

Non-native. Introduced to Arizona in 1918. Heavy bodied fish. Back is gray to olive-bronze with green-copper reflections. Sides are black to olive-yellow; belly is pale yellow to white.

Savannah buffalo are active throughout the day, spending 18 hours per day walking (Nowak, 1991). Simultaneous grazing occurs as the herds move, although feeding is most frequent in the late afternoon and evening (Nowak, 1991).

The wild buffalo is only in areas where it is well protected; where there is substantial human disturbance it is mainly nocturnal.
