Gopher snakes are related to pine and bull snakes. Found throughout North America and Mexico, there are eight known subspecies, of which two may actually be separate species. In the wild, their diet consists of small mammals, birds and eggs.

The gopher snake is a close relative of the pine and bull snakes, and all are of great benefit to farmers because of the number of rodents they eat.

Though predators themselves, the young have been known to fall prey to several species of hawks as well as American Crows, Black-billed Magpies, and tree climbing bull snakes.

Most temperate snakes, including king snakes, milk snakes, bull snakes, rat snakes, water, and garter snakes need to hibernate.
