Black Bullhead (Ameiurus melas)
Other Names Polliwog, Chucklehead Cat Description Ameiurus is Greek and means "primitive" or "curtailed" in reference to the slight notch in the caudal fin; melas is also Greek and means "black.

Zebra Bullhead Shark
The Zebra Bullhead Shark, Heterodontus zebra, is a bottom-dwelling shark that is found in the western Pacific Ocean, off Australia, Indonesia and east Asia. Very little is known about this shark.

Appearance:
Chin barbels on browns are pigmented, not whitish as with yellow bullheads. The sides of brown bullheads have a distinct, irregular brownish mottling over a light background. The belly is creamy white.

Characteristic of sluggish streams and standing water with dense vegetation. Tolerant of acidic waters.

Bullheads belong to the catfish family. They have no scales and on their face they have sets of wormlike feelers, called barbels. Of Minnesota's three bullhead species--black, brown, and yellow--the black bullhead can live in the most polluted waters.

Bullheads are small, cold-water relatives of scorpionfish and the stonefish. Like them, they are stout, bottom-living fish with a broad head, large mouth, and spiny fins. The long-spined bullhead also has a long, sharp spine on each cheek.

Bullheads spawn in the late spring when water temperatures approach 21øC. One or both parents excavate a shallow nest in a protected area of mud or sandy bottom. Spawning occurs in the daytime.

Black bullheads are native to the Great Lakes area down to Northern Mexico and the Gulf region. Introduced into Arizona in 1920.

The Order "Bullhead sharks"
The order of the bullhead sharks comprises one family with only one genus. There are only 9 known species of bullhead sharks. These bizarre looking sharks possess strong spines in front of both dorsal fins.

The Galapagos bullhead shark produces eggs rather than live young. The eggs are roughly cone shaped, with a spiral flange running around the outside (2) (4).

Bullheads start spawning around mid-May and continue through June. They build nests in natural cavities or make saucer shaped depressions near submerged cover, such as tree roots or sunken logs.
