Bullsnake (Pituophis catinefer sayi)
Description The bullsnake is a heavy-bodied snake that ranges from three to five feet in length. They are overall beige to light brown with dark brown or black blotches.

Bullsnakes live along the western part of the state in sand prairies, oak savannas and in pine and oak barrens. They feed primarily on small mammals and do a good job of controlling pocket gopher populations.

Bullsnakes are most common along the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers and their tributaries, but also range into northwestern Wisconsin. More field work is needed to determine the extent of the range in northwestern Wisconsin.

The Bullsnake (Pituophis melanoleucus sayi) will rapidly vibrate its tail in dry vegetation to mimic or imitate
the sound of a rattlesnake's rattle to avoid dangerous encounters with animals and humans alike.

Terrestrial predators include coyotes, badgers, lynx, black-footed ferrets, rattlesnakes, and bullsnakes. Avian predators include prairie falcons, golden eagles, and a variety of hawks.

Snakes such as bullsnakes (Pituophis catenifer), rat snakes (Elaphe spp.) and garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.) have been reported eating eastern towhee eggs.

Even more recently, an alternate view has proposed combining all the ratsnakes and the bullsnakes together in the genus Pituophis. Further study will clarify classification.

A roadrunner life does have its dangers. Roadrunners are occasionally preyed upon by hawks, house cats, raccoons, rat snakes, bullsnakes, skunks, and, coyotes eat nestlings and eggs. During the winter months, many succumb to freezing, icy weather.

The Florida pine snake is very similar to the Louisiana pine snake, the northern pine snake and the black pine, they are all subspecies of the same genus and species. They are also very closely related to the bullsnake.

However, drift fences may under sample a few species which are strong climbers (tree frogs) or which have very small home ranges (Kirtland¹s snake). Large active snakes such as racers and bullsnakes may also be able to frequently evade drift fences.
