California Quail (Callipepla californica)
California Quail was introduced into central Chile in 1870 as a game-bird and it now seems fairly common as far south as Puerto Montt.

Callipepla californica
The California Quail (Callipepla californica) is a very common bird of the Pacific coast region of the United States ranging quite a way inland in many areas.

The California Quail (Callipepla californica, also known as the valley quail) is a common bird from the western USA. Quails congregate in groups of 10 to 20 birds, called coveys.

Diet The California quail eats seeds, plant parts like buds and sometimes insects. They feed in flocks in the early morning.
Life Cycle Males often compete for a mate. They will mate with only one female.

The California quail is a small, plump bird with a short black beak. The male has a gray chest, and brown back and wings. It has a black throat with white stripes and a brown cap on its head.

There are 130 species of quails worldwide. They are small, short-tailed game birds of the family Phasianidae (order Galliformes), resembling partridges but generally smaller and less robust.

The New World quails are small, plump terrestrial birds only distantly related to the quails of the Old World, but named for their similar appearance and habits.

The california quail, Callipepla californica,the one with the little top knot, was introduced along with the brown quail, but is found in both the North and South Islands.

The California Quail (Callipepla californica) is a member of the Phasianidae family which consists of partridges, grouse, turkeys and quail.

Walking the tracks on the island by myself in the day time, I saw many California Quail, Tui, Grey Warbler, Fantail, and my one and only Barbary Dove. There are also many waders or shorebirds as you can see in the picture to the right.
