The California sea lion is a type of seal that lives in cool waters off the rocky coast of western North America. This marine mammal makes a roaring noise (hence its name), barks, and honks.

CALIFORNIA SEA LION
The California sea lion lives in colonies on isolated beaches and rocky coastlines. Active by day and night, it feeds in the ocean and hauls out at intervals to rest on shore.

The playful, curious California sea lions are highly social animals. They live in groups or "harems," with an adult bull and 10-15 cows. During the summer-long breeding season, the animals collect by the thousands on isolated coastlines and islands.

General description
Typical coloring ranges from tan to chocolate brown and may appear black when wet. The head has a pointed muzzle and the profile resembles that of a dog.

California sea lions are among the most gregarious marine mammals, forming dense aggregations of a thousand or more animals on land. They also may travel, socialize or rest at the surface in groups of ten or more near haul out areas.

California Sea Lions usually come ashore on the windward sides of cool, fog-shrouded islands, offshore rocks or islets. Members of the Otariidae Family (eared seals) are usually found only in temperate and subtropical regions.

California sea lions are the best-known eared seals. All seals can hear, but earless seals (in the family Phocidae) have internal ears. The eared seals (sea lions and fur seals, in the family Otariidae) have small external ears.
