Caracals are said to be nocturnal but they are often seen during the day. In colder areas they are more diurnal. They will rest in dense vegetation or a natural rock crevice. Social behaviour is limited to courtship and mating.

Caracal are easily identified by the prominent tufts of hair on the tips of their black ears. Their coats are short and sandy coloured, with white patches on their underside, throat and chin.
Caracals are ground-dwellers but can climb well. Males have larger ranges than females.

Due to their small body size, adult steenbok have many different predators, including leopard, caracal, and pythons (Walther, 1990).
