Other Names Channel Cat, Hump-back Blue Description Ictalurus is Greek meaning "fish cat", and furcatus is Latin, meaning "forked", a reference to the species' forked tail fin.

Adults have stout bodies with prominently humped backs in front of the dorsal fin. They resemble channel catfish by having deeply forked tails, but are lack the spots and have a longer, straight-edged anal.

Catfish are a large and diverse group of fish found all over the world. Though a few types inhabit the ocean, the majority lives in freshwater. Catfish can be easily recognized by the so-called "whiskers" (barbels) that give them their name.
The Catfish lay eggs in spring, usually around submerged weeds. The channel catfish, however, migrates from lakes and large rivers to spawn in small sidestreams.
River catfish are known to inhabit Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. Every year they leave the lake and enter the Mekong River as part of their annual spawning cycle. Breeding begins at the onset of the region's rainy season (May-July).

Bear Gulch Reservoir's population of Rana draytonii was extirpated in the early 1980's, probably due to an infestation of non-native catfish.

They are excellent swimmers and feed primarily on fish, particularly small catfish, which they capture either by ambush or by actively foraging along the edges or bottom of rivers and lakes.
