The guinea pig, originally from Peru, still exists there where it is called a Cavy. The origin of the common name "Guinea Pig" is uncertain.

Guinea pigs are rodents and belong to the cavy family. They are related to rats and mice. Females are called sows, and males are called boars.

Domestic guinea pigs are of three basic types, according to the type and length of their hair. The American/English cavy has short hair with a smooth coat. The Abyssinian cavy has a wiry coat with hair that swirls into rosettes.

Origins: The guinea pig was bred from the wild cavy, which lives in grasslands, woodlands, swamps, plains, rocky areas, and deserts in much of South America.
