(sf´lpd´´), member of the class Cephalopoda, the most highly organized group of mollusks (phylum Mollusca), and including the squids, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses.

Cephalopods inhabit all of the world’s oceans and occur at a wide range of depths, from ocean bottoms (benthic species) to open waters (pelagic species).

Cephalopods (meaning "head foot") are mollusks with tentacles and a large head. These soft-bodied invertebrates include animals like squid, octopuses and cuttlefish.

Cephalopods include squids, octopuses and natiluses. There are about 650 species of cephalopods alive today.

The Cephalopoda, however, do not harmonize so well with this view. The earliest forms of this class geologically are the Nautiloidea.

The albatross diet is predominantly cephalopods, fish, crustaceans and offal (= entrails and internal organs of butchered animals), although they will also scavenge carrion and feed on other zooplankton.

longimanus feeds mainly on pelagic cephalopods and bony fish. However, its diet can be far more varied and less selective—it is known to eat threadfins, stingrays, sea turtles, sea birds, gastropods, crustaceans, mammalian carrion, ...

Cetaceans have vital ecosystem roles as consumers of plankton, fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, and other aquatic animals.

They prey by snapping up food that comes up to the surface of the sea.

A Quick One: As a cephalopod, the squid is one of the largest, fastest and most intelligent of all invertebrates. Most squid bodies are torpedo-shaped; this helps propel them swiftly through the water.

Ammonites first appeared about 240 million years ago, though they descended from straight-shelled cephalopods called bacrites that date back to the Devonian, about 415 million years ago.

The squid is a marine cephalopod similar to the octopus. Like all other cephalopods, squid have a distinct head, bilateral symmetry, a mantle, and arms. Squid, like cuttlefish, have eight arms and two tentacles arranged in pairs.

Like squid, they are cephalopods, meaning 'head-foot’, so named because the feet (arms) are attached to the head.
The bulbous sack-like body, or mantle, is perched atop the head; the mouth and beak are on the underside, where the arms converge.

Their diet also includes crustaceans, cephalopods, and other shellfish. Seals are the favorite whipping boy of fishermen who think they are entitled to all the fish. Seals have been hunted for food, pelts, and oil.

Scalloped hammerheads feed on cephalopods (squid), fish, crustaceans, and turtles.
Scalloped hammerhead sharks are found worldwide in temperate seas. They are usually found in deep water but it is not uncommon to find them closer to shore.

Octopus, anchovies, herring, cephalopods and pilchards are other marine animals the common dolphin can be seen eating. In some parts of the world, the common dolphin can be seen feeding at night.

They feed on a variety of fish, cephalopods (such as squid and octopus), and other sea life. They use echolocation—
bouncing sound off of objects to determine their location—to hunt and use a series of high-pitched clicks to stun prey.

Diet includes mostly krill (a shrimp-like crustacean), cephalopods, fishes, seals (mainly crabeater seals), seabirds, and penguins (mainly Adélie penguins)
