Description
: The white rhino is the largest living land animal after the elephant (giraffes are taller but weigh less). They have massive bodies, short necks, and broad chests. Males are slightly heavier.

The other African rhinoceros is the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). These common names are misleading, as those two species are not really distinguishable by color.
Of the five species, the Southern White (Ceratotherium simum) subspecies or race is the most plentiful at about 11,600 animals while the Northern White (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is down to about 15 animals in the wild (10 in captivity).

Greater one-horned Asian rhinoceroses are the second largest of five rhino species. The largest is Africa's white rhino (Ceratotherium simum), which can weigh up to 8,000 pounds and stands about six inches taller.
The canines and incisors are vestigial except for the lower incisors in Asian rhinos, which are developed into powerful slashing tusks. In grazing rhinos ( Ceratotherium), the cheek teeth are hypsodont, but they are brachydont in the other genera.
