The Plain Chachalaca (Ortalis vetula) is member of the guan family which ranges from extreme south Texas southward to Costa Rica.

Chachalacas, genus Ortalis, are ground-feeding turkeylike birds so named because of their loud, harsh calls, which sound like cha-cha-la-ca. They are commonly found in wooded areas throughout South and Central America.

Diet The plain chachalaca eats leaves, grain, berries, buds and sometimes insects.
Life Cycle The female will lay three to four eggs in a nest made of sticks and lined with moss and leaves. Occasionally they will use the old nest of other birds.
