Chacma baboon
In 1986, a troop of chacma baboons was found living in the heart of the Namib desert - the most arid environment known to be inhabited by a non-human primate (the annual rainfall is only 27mm).
Unlike Chacma baboons (P. ursinus) which sometimes sleep in caves, P. papio appears to enter caves in order to lick the walls. This geophagy may be a way that the animals can obtain essential salts.
Mammals that live in the same habitat are: steenbok, springbok, oryx, kudu, Dassie Rat, Chacma Baboon, rock dassie, klipspringer and ostrich.
Size: There is considerable variation in size and weight depending on species, the Chacma baboon can be 120 cm (47 inches) and weigh 40 kg (90 lb) while the biggest Guinea baboon is 50 cm (20 inches) and weighs only 14 kg (30 lb).
