Chacoan Peccaries (Catagonus wagneri) Chacoan peccaries are the largest of the three peccary species. The other, more common species of Peccaries are the Collared Peccary (sometimes called the Javelina) and the White-lipped Peccary.

Since 1985, Proyecto Taguá in the Paraguayan Chaco has maintained the largest collection of Chacoan peccaries in captivity.
Chacoan peccaries frequently use dust baths and wallows. The distance vision and olfactory senses are well developed, although this peccary is not especially shy or wary.
The Zoo is Helping Chacoan Peccaries The Saint Louis Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan® (SSP) for Chacoan peccaries. This is a cooperative breeding program, with a number of zoos working together to ensure the survival of the species.
