Description
The Chicken Turtle has a long neck with yellow stripes and a yellow stripe on the forelegs and rear legs. The carapace is olive to dark brown. with a net-like pattern. Females are usually larger than males.

Eastern Chicken Turtle Deirochelys reticularia reticularia. Uncommon to locally common. Occurs throughout Coastal Plain and a portion of Ridge and Valley, where it is less frequently encountered.

According to Pritchard (1967), painted turtles superficially resemble chicken turtles of the genus Deirochelys whose range is restricted to the southeastern United States.

The natural predators of the Crayfish include alligators, burbots (a type of cod), chicken turtle, painted turtle, desman a type of otter, grackle a type of a bird.

While many live near water, turtles can’t breathe underwater-they hold their breath. The Cypress Swamp exhibits yellow-bellied sliders, chicken turtles, spotted turtles, river cooters and alligator snapping turtles.
