The Chimney Swift occurs throughout the eastern half of the United States during the breeding season. During the winter, these birds are found in South America.

In the United States the common eastern species is the chimney swift, Chaetura pelagica, miscalled chimney swallow. Its spiny tail acts as a prop when it clings to the chimneys in which it builds its nest of twigs, cemented with saliva.

Like all swifts, the Chimney Swift rarely lands on the ground.
Swifts are small aerial birds, spending the majority of their lives flying.
