Chinstrap penguins, Pygoscelis antarctica, are found in large colonies, or rookeries, along the coast of the South Orkneys, South Shetlands and South Sandwich Islands and in some smaller colonies on the Balleny Islands, south of New Zealand.
Chinstrap penguins are well adapted for the extreme cold of the Antarctic waters. Their short, densely packed feathers act as insulation to keep the heat in, as well as a water proofing layer to keep the water out.
Chinstrap penguins may be the most abundant penguin, with a population estimated at 7.5 million breeding pairs.

Chinstraps can reach depths of 70 m (230 ft), but most dives are less than 45 m (148 ft).

Chinstrap penguins sometimes nests in snow which melts, leaving the bird in a water-filled hole. The King Penguin does not build a nest at all. In temperate zones, penguins nest in scattered grasses, bushland or holes in sandunes.
