More on Chiru
Antelope - name applied to a large number of hoofed, ruminant mammals of the cattle family which also includes the sheep and goats.

The chiru is endemic to the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. It is found primarily on the alpine steppe of northwest Tibet in the remote Chang Tang area of China. There are a number of both migratory as well as resident populations.

The chiru is threatened by hunting for its meat, magnificent horns, and soft, fine wool which is used to make the extremely (and unfortunately) chic shahtoosh scarves. Chiru is probably a local native name in Tibet.

Chiru prefer high, relatively flat or gently rolling habitat in remote regions of the plateau. They are great runners, reaching speeds of up to 50 mph. The life span of chiru is comparatively short-about eight years in the wild.

Chiru are found on the Tibetan plateau, the highest, biggest and most remote plateau in the world. Chiru inhabitat high altitude plains, undulating hills and montane valleys at elevations of up to 5,500m.

The Chiru or Tibetan Antelope has suffered huge population declines with an estimated 90% of the population having been wiped out over the past 100 years so their wool can be used to make scarves and shawls - Shahtoosh.
