Chrysalis The pupa, or stage of a butterfly's life cycle between larva and adult. Cocoon The silken case spun by many moth larvae as a protection for their pupae. Compound Eye Eye composed of many units, each with a lens or facet.

It sheds its outer skin one last time, and transforms into a pupa or chrysalis. In about 2 weeks the adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, and rests. Once its wings are expanded and dried completely, it flies away.

By about the end of summer any survivors have changed into a chrysalis (pupa) which can be either green or brown, depending on the colour of its background. It is attached to the milk parsley stem by a silk pad and silk girdle.

After a few weeks of feeding, the caterpillars form a chrysalis. Adults emerge in about ten days. Two generations of Karner blues are produced every year. The first hatch occurs from mid-May through early June.

The chrysalis resembles a bird dropping suspended from a leaf or twig, in the hopes that it will not be preyed upon.

Upon emerging from the chrysalis, the new butterfly pumps fluid from its abdomen into its wet folded wings, causing the wings to expand to their full size.

Next, it sheds its outer skin and begins the transformation into a chrysalis. This process is completed in a matter of hours. Packed tightly inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly in about two weeks.

Winter chrysalis, to 1 1/4" (32 mm), smooth, bark-colored, swollen about wing cases; summer chrysalis may be green. Chief host plants include spicebush (Lindera benzoin), sassafras (Sassafras albidum), and various bays (Persea).

Life Cycle The zebra longwing butterfly begins mating right after it emerges from its chrysalis. The female lays five to fifteen eggs on the leaves of passion flower vines. The caterpillar has a white body with long black spines and a yellow head.

After a while the caterpillars wrap themselves in protective enclosures, called chrysalises. At this stage the insects are called pupae. After some time, pupation ends and the mature butterflies emerge from their chrysalises.

It then seeks a sheltered spot, suspends itself by silken threads and sheds one last time to reveal skin that will harden to form the chrysalis or pupa.

It emerges from its chrysalis in July or August, hibernates in a protected place over winter, and emerges again in early spring.

After the last shedding, the caterpillar fastens to a branch and enters the pupa or chrysalis stage; moth caterpillars use a silk thread from their silk glands to spin a protective cocoon.

After a few weeks, the moth's cocoon or the butterfly's chrysalis splits open and out climbs a butterfly or moth!
The insect stretches out its wings to unfold and dry before flying away to find a mate.

Life History: Full-grown caterpillar is purple-brown with black patches. White band along sides. Chrysalis pale green with yellowish tinge.
Wing Span: 3-3 ½ inches (7 - 8.5 cm.).
Caterpillar Hosts: Pipevines (genus Aristolochia).

The larva transforms into a pupa (chrysalis), which then transforms into a butterfly by metamorphosis.

In butterflies the pupa is also called a chrysalis.
Univoltine: (also known as 'single-brooded'). Insect life cycle that takes 12 months to be complete, and involves a single generation.

Pupa is named from its resemblance to a chrysalis, the apex being rounded. The shell of Clausilia is sinistral and its aperture is provided with a hinged plate.

The eggs will hatch in the spring and the new caterpillars eat right away! They are green with a light yellow stripe and can grow to be up to 3/4 of an inch. Soon the caterpillars will grow a chrysalis--a kind of shell where they grow into adults by ...
