CLOUDED LEOPARD (Felis nebulosa or macroscelis), a large arboreal cat from the forests of south-east Asia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Formosa.

Raising Clouded Leopards
Staff at the Zoo's Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia, are hand-rearing three clouded leopard cubs. Two males were born there on March 24, and a female was born on July 9, 2009.

Clouded leopards are named for the cloud-like spots on their coats that enable them to blend into their jungle environment. Also, despite being called a leopard, they are not related to the true leopard (Panthera pardus).

Clouded Leopards
The clouded leopard is more at home in the trees than on the ground and can move nimbly through the dense forests of southeast Asia and the eastern Himalayas.

Clouded leopards are very similar to the extinct sabre-toothed cats. In proportion to their body size, they have the longest canines of any cat. They are top forest predators capable of performing some amazing feats amongst the trees.

More distantly related is the clouded leopard, Neofelis nebulosa, of the forests of SE Asia. Its gray or yellowish coat is strikingly marked with black and brown; it has stripes on the face and tail, spots on the limbs, and rosettes on the body.

But it does illustrate a catch-22 of zoo conservation: in order to attract visitors an animal has to be well known and easily recognised (like lions); but to become well known the animal is likely to be common (unlike clouded leopards); ...
