(kät´´mn´d, -mn´-) or coati(kät´), omnivore of North and South America related to the raccoon.

The coatimundi (pronounced ko-WAH-ti-MUN-dee) is also called the coati (pronounced ko-WAH-ti) or the hog-nosed coon. It is a small mammal that lives in small groups called bands. The coatimundi is related to the raccoon.

The term "coatimundi" originated around the turn of the century and was used at that time to describe the males, who live alone- "mundi" means "solitary". Over time this term has come to be used interchangeably with "coati" to describe both sexes.

Also known as:
Coatimundi, Gato Solo, Pizote
Sexual Dimorphism:
Males are larger than females.

Coatis are also referred to in some texts as coatimundis. The name coati or coatimundi is Tupian Indian in origin. The prefix "coati" means 'belt', and "Tim" means 'nose' referring to the way the coatis tuck their noses under their bellies to sleep.

Among the other animals we did not see were ringtails, coatimundis, bears, and any interesting herps at all other than a few speedy whiptail lizards. But we couldn't complain about a lack of scenic beauty.

However, as we were leaving, after a day filled with monkeys, coatimundi, toucans, oropendola, toucans, and guan, I did think to mention that I noticed a particularly colorful turkey at the entrance.
