The Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) is a diving duck which nests across much of Canada and Alaska while wintering across most of the United States on both fresh and salt water.

Common Goldeneye: Medium-sized diving duck with white-striped black upperparts and white underparts. Head is iridescent green-black with white circular patch between yellow eyes and dark gray bill.

Common Goldeneye and Barrow's Goldeneye
The Common Goldeneye really is more common than the Barrow's, at least in the SF Bay Area, and most of the lower 48. Barrow's Goldeneyes tend to be mainly coastal, and more in the northern states.

Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula. Fairly common in winter, spring, and late fall in Tennessee Valley and Gulf Coast regions, but occasional in summer. Uncommon in winter and rare in spring and fall in Mountain region.

Here is a pair of Common Goldeneye, the drake has a glossy green head with a large round white spot before the eye. The female has a dark brown, fairly round head and a gray bill.

They are slightly bigger than Common Goldeneye B. clangula with a longer, less triangular head. The white crescent on the lores reaches above the eye while in the Common Goldeneye it is a spot below the level of the eye.

The Smew (Mergellus albellus) is a small duck which is intermediate between the mergansers and the goldeneyes, and has interbred with the Common Goldeneye. It is the only member of the genus Mergellus (Selby, 1840).
