The Common Gull: The Common Gull, Larus canus is a medium-sized gull which breeds in the northwest of North America (where it is called Mew Gull), Europe and Asia. It migrates further south in winter.

The Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) is a common gull across most of the coastlines on North America. It breeds along the Great Lakes and across Canada and in winter may be found throughout much of the interior of the United States.

The Ring-billed Gull is probably the most common gull found in the state. Adapted well to living with humans, it can often be found sitting in parking lots or scavenging at landfills.

Distant Common and Red-throated Loons were just recognizable while Brant, Red-breasted Mergansers and the three common gulls were closer and easier to identify.

They noted its conspicuous greenish legs and its unmarked and unbanded, small yellowish bill and were convinced that the bird was either the western Mew Gull or its European counterpart, the Common Gull, Larus canus canus.

The Mew Gull, native to the northern forests of northwestern North America, also breed in northern Eurasia, where it is known as the Common Gull. In Alberta, it nests only in the northeastern corner of the province.

The common gull—called sea gull in North America—is the herring gull Larus argentatus smithsonianus, a subspecies of the common European gull L. argentatus. It is found on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and on the Great Lakes.

defensive at nest; often perform distraction display. Protective cover is critical factor in selection of nest site. Drops sea urchins from heights onto beach to crack. Adult plumage attained in third year. Known in Europe as Common Gull.
