Common newt (Triturus vulgaris): also known as the smooth newt, this newt is the most widespread of the three species, found mainly in lowland habitats. It is the only newt found in Ireland.

The Common Newt, also known as Smooth Newt or Brown Eft, only spends a portion of its life in water, for in summer, autumn and winter it lives on land exclusively.
