The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier, 1797), reaches between 30-91 cms in length. Like other octopus species, the soft-bodied common octopus has eight arms with numerous suckers, and there is no internal shell.

The common octopus is edible and in some areas so many have been caught that the species has become very rare. It should have protection in these areas to allow numbers to increase.

The common octopus of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic occasionally reaches 10 ft (3 m) in length; the giant octopus of the Pacific may have a diameter of over 30 ft (9 m). Octopuses reproduce sexually.
