scutes is completely absent in the Common Snapping Turtle. If visible during defensive displays, the tongue of the Common Snapping Turtle is flat and fleshy, while that of the Alligator Snapping Turtle has a worm-like lure.

The common snapping turtle is the largest turtle in Ohio. Large specimens may weigh more than 35 pounds and have a carapace more than 14 inches long.

The Common Snapping Turtle, Chelydra serpentina serpentina, is found in fresh water bodies throughout the panhandle. It has a gray brown to brown shell with either low bumps or a jagged hind edge.

Subspecies The subspecies found in Minnesota is the common snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina serpentina. Range Statewide. Habitat The snapping turtle is found wherever permanent water exists.

The common snapping turtle, or snapper (Chelydra serpentina), is found from SE and S central Canada to NE South America. The adult is often over 18 in. (45 cm) long and weighs over 30 lb (14 kg); some specimens weigh twice as much.

Puppy Love: Strangely enough, the Common Snapping turtle, when raised in captivity from a hatchling, can sometimes become extremely docile and devoted to its owner.

Alligator snapping turtles and common snapping turtles have a very different looking appearances. The alligator snapping turtle has a long head and almost spiky shell, where the common snapping turtle has a more rounded head and a smoother shell.

An alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temminckii) was found in a garden of private house, Hiroshima-shi, 12 October 1999. It is said that common snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina serpentina) reproduce in Chiba Prefecture.
