The Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) nests along much of the east coast of the United States as well as in fresh-water habitats of Canada. It is a common migrant along the Gulf coast of Texas.
Common Terns nest colonially, sometimes in single pairs, often with other species, usually on sandy or gravelly beaches or on flat areas on islands.
Common Terns breed in colonies, and nest on the ground; nests consist of a shallow scrape or depression, sometimes lined with grasses, seaweed, or shells. They usually lay up to 3 olive-buff eggs, marked with numerous dark brown blotches.

Common Tern Sterna hirundo. Breeder. Fairly common in fall, common in spring and summer, and rare in winter in Gulf Coastal Plain region. In other regions, rare in spring and fall, and occasional in summer.
Many other less common terns are permanent residents and warm season visitors. The Least and Roseate Terns are threatened species. In the late 1800's and early 1900's these species were decimated by plume hunters.
The Arctic Tern is slightly smaller than the Common Tern with long, narrow wings and very short legs. In breeding plumage, the Arctic Tern has a light gray mantle and belly.
It often nests with Common Terns and Black Skimmers. Breeding habitat includes sand, gravel, or shell beaches, or some grassy areas of coastal islands. The nest is usually built in a depression on the ground.
Very similar to Common Tern Sterna hirundo, but with shorter blood-red bill without the black tip of Common Tern. Tail longer and legs shorter than Common Tern.
