Common Toads emerge from hibernation in late February and start a hazardous journey to their breeding ponds. Many toads are killed, as they attempt to cross busy roads. Toads return to the same pond year after year.

Common toads secrete an irritant from their skin that prevents most predators from wanting to eat them. Unfortunately for the toads however, a few predators, such as grass snakes and hedgehogs, don't seem to be deterred.

European Common Toad - Bufo bufo.
European common toads (Bufo bufo) range in size from about 3 to 8 inches in length. Females are generally larger than males. Their skin is warty and can be brown, brownish-red, or green.

The common frog, common toad and common newt are no longer common - and populations of the natterjack toad and great crested newt have become so low that these two species have been officially declared endangered species and are protected by law.

Habitats and Habits: These familiar amphibians are the most common toads in many parts of the Piedmont. They also occur over much of the Coastal Plain and Mountains. They are primarily nocturnal but may also be active by day.
