The other two are the common zebra (Equus burchelli) and the mountain zebra (Equua zebra). The common zebra is widely distributed throughout southern and eastern Africa, south of the Sahara.

It formerly inhabited open plains in S Africa, where its range overlapped that of the common zebra (Equus burchelli). Its coat was sandy brown and its legs and tail whitish; only its head, neck, and shoulders were dark-striped.

My wife was driving necessarily slowly along a bumpy dirt road while I watched the common zebra-tailed lizards, whiptails, and spiny lizards race across the road.

Several survived in zoos for another 20 years; unfortunately, zoos had not yet begun breeding for conservation purposes. The quagga was very closely related to the common zebra (Equus burchelli), whose scientific name is a tribute to Burchell.
