Coral is made by millions of tiny carnivorous (meat eating) animals called polyps. Polyps live in groups called colonies.

The coral snake occurs throughout the entire state including the northern keys. The species extends north to southeastern North Carolina and west to eastern Texas and northeastern Mexico.

Coral snakes are most notable for their red, yellow/white, and black colored banding. Several nonvenomous species have similar coloration, however, including the Scarlet King snake and the Milk Snake.

Coral reefs are scattered throughout the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific oceans. About 600,000 km2 (231,600 mi2) of coral reefs are known to exist, comprising 0.17% of the ocean's surface.

Corals are carnivorous marine organisms with stinging cells and tentacles. They are related to jellyfish and sea anemones. The term coral is also applied to their skeletons, which can be organic (soft) or composed of minerals (hard).

Coral banded shrimp are often found in pairs in the wild; the females are usually larger than their male counterparts. These "cleaner shrimp" will rid coral and fish neighbors of parasites and debris, and are vital to coral reef ecosystems.

Coral snakes have the most toxic venom of the venomous snakes found in Louisiana. They quickly immobilize their prey, which consists of mainly snakes and lizards. Mine have eaten Elaphe obsoleta, E.

These large coral colonies are easy to recognize because of their fan shape. A flexible, horny substance called gorgonin forms this coral's central skeleton, which supports all branches of the colony.

The Sonoran Coral Snake produces fairly consistent, evenly spaced pops of low amplitude (about 50 decibels) and limited range in pitch or frequency (442-5523 Hz).

The environmental community has long proclaimed the importance of keeping mangrove forests and coral reefs intact as a means of buffering coastal villages against the impact of severe storms.

A range of nest sites are utilised by the penguins at Manly including under rocks on the foreshore, under seaside houses and structures, such as stairs, in wood piles and under overhanging vegetation including lantana and under coral tree roots.
