The coyote (Canis latrans, meaning "barking dog", also prairie wolf) is a member of the Canidae (dog) family and a relative of the domestic dog. Coyotes are native to North America and are only found in North America south to Costa Rica.

The coyote feeds mainly on small mammals such as mice and hares, carrion and some vegetation. Occasionally, a pack will try its luck hunting deer, but a single coyote is not usually successful when hunting a deer on its own.

The coyote is a wild dog, which are widespread across Canada and across the United States. They are pack animals, and the coyote family usually live together in a den.

The coyote is a very vocal animal. It has a number of vocalizations including barks, growls, yips, whines and howls. It uses a long howl to let other members of the pack know where it is. It uses short barks to warn of danger.

The coyote is the best runner of the canids (dog family: wolves, dogs) reaching speeds of 25 to 30 mph, even 40 mph over short distances, and leaping up to 14 feet in a single bound.

The Wily Coyote: The term "wily coyote" was possibly coined in response to this intelligent canid's problem-solving abilities when hunting prey.

Coyotes are nomads. Males may roam over territories as large as 36 square miles, though females usually stay within a six square mile area. Adult male coyotes may share the territory of two or more females, which may overlap the ranges of other males.

Coyotes may pair up for life. They mate in February, and a litter of five to 10 pups, is born in a den during April. The den is often located in a bank or on a hillside, or it may be an enlarged woodchuck or rabbit burrow.
