Cricket frogs generally live on the edges of shallow ponds and streams with good vegetation in the water and along the shore.
They are active during daylight. Most are insectivores. In turn, cricket frogs are eaten by herons, fish, snakes and minks.

Cricket frogs usually emerge from hibernation in late March to early April and breed from mid-May to mid-July.

Cricket frogs are tolerant of disturbance. They frequently inhabit man-made or man-modified situations such as gravel pits or farm ponds, as well as more pristine habitats.

The Florida Cricket Frog, Acris gryllus dorsalis, is found in wetlands statewide. It usually has a brown back and speckled white underside though coloring and markings vary. It reaches a length of 1.3".

Northern cricket frogs are thought to hibernate in crayfish burrows and cracks in pond banks (Irwin et al. 1999). They emerge from winter dormancy in late April. Breeding is stimulated by rain, and occurs from late May to July (Burkett 1984).

Acris is the Cricket Frog genus, the Greek 'κρις (Akris) referred to a type of locust (see Strongs Lexicon). It probably is in reference to the mating chorus somewhat resembling a chorus of crickets.
