Crustaceans can be divided according to size into two main groups. The larger group, which is divided into the classes Branchiopoda, Copepoda, Ostracoda, and Cirripedia, includes the familiar shrimp, crayfish, lobsters, and crabs.

Crustaceans
The world of the crustaceans is a world of bizarre shapes and adaptations. This group of animals is probably best-known for their hard outer shell. As the animal grows, this shell must be removed and discarded.

The crustacean is about 5.9 inches long and blind. Its morphological characteristics and genetic makeup led to the creation of a new taxonomic family, Kiwaidae, named after Kiwa, the mythical Polynesian goddess of shellfish.

Most crustaceans are free-living, but some are sessile and a few are even parasitic. Most use their maxillae and mandibles to take in food. The walking legs, including specialized chelipeds, may be used to help capture prey.

Some crustaceans also migrate for breeding. In many species of crabs, the females will move into shallow coastal waters to mate and lay her eggs, then they return to deeper ocean waters.

Shrimplike crustaceans are responsible for the flamingo's pink color. The birds pale in captivity unless their diet is supplemented.

Diet: Fish, crustaceans and squid.

Small fish, crustaceans, and insects are the preferred foods for Least Terns; small mollusks and marine worms are eaten as well.

BEHAVIOR:
These seals do not have special physical adaptations to deal with the warm climate in which they live. Instead, they remain inactive during the heat of the day, finding a resting spot with shade or wet sand.

Diet: fish, crustaceans and insects.
Socialisation: It is generally seen singly or in small loose groups.

Loons eat fish, crustaceans and some water plants.
The Red-throated Loon is a smaller species with reddish throat.
The Arctic Loon is similar to it, but with a black throat in summer.

Primarily fish, crustaceans, insects; sometimes, the eggs of other species.
Notes
The Arctic Tern is a world champion for migration. Some migrate over 32,000 km a year.

Some common prey items include deer, elk, sheep (Ovis spp.), rabbits and hares (Leporidae), various rodents (Rodentia), ground-nesting birds, amphibians, lizards, snails, fish, crustaceans, and insects.

Feeding The diet of Ashy Storm-Petrels includes small fish, young squid, and crustaceans, which it finds on the ocean surface at night. Spiny lobster young have been found in the stomachs of Ashy Storm-Petrels in their southern range.

These birds are omnivores and indulge in eating crustaceans, fish, mollusks, tiny reptiles, berries and aquatic plants. Whooping cranes love to feed on frogs, rodents, fish, crayfish, snails and even small birds.

Marine halfbeaks are omnivores feeding on algae; marine plants such as seagrasses; plankton; invertebrates such as pteropods and crustaceans; and smaller fishes Randall, J: Food habits of reef fishes of the West Indies.

Fingerlings feed almost exclusively on crustaceans. Immature aquatic insects and crustaceans often comprise a considerable proportion of the adult diet. The average life span is usually less than five years, and most adults are less than one pound.

Their principal diet is crabs and other crustaceans.
During the 1980s, many eggs were removed from the beach at Rancho Nuevo and incubated in containers.

The food of the spotted shag consists mainly of small fish and crustaceans and, according to Stead, when there is a migration of whale-feed, or britt, along the coast, the birds subsist almost entirely on it.

Juveniles take a variety of aquatic invertebrates (insects, crustaceans, molluscs). As they grow, various vertebrates take up a greater percentage of the diet. These include fish, amphibians, reptiles and water birds.

The diet of the Northern Hemisphere humpback whales consists of planktonic crustaceans and small schooling fish. Humpback whales in the Southern Ocean feed mainly on the Antarctic krill.

The species feeds on fish, crustaceans, offal and squid and although solitary, individuals may forage at night in mixed-species flocks.

They roll to one side and lower the lip to scour and siphon the bottom for tiny crustaceans, especially amphipods known as "sand fleas." They have small, thick, widely-placed baleen plates for screening food from the water.

The albatross diet is predominantly cephalopods, fish, crustaceans and offal (= entrails and internal organs of butchered animals), although they will also scavenge carrion and feed on other zooplankton.

Magellanic penguins eat small fish, crustaceans, krill, and squid, and can swim at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour when pursuing prey.

FEEDING HABITS: Cormorants mainly eat fish, but will also feed on amphibians and crustaceans. Using its feet for propulsion, cormorants can dive up to 25 ft. and remain underwater for 30 to 70 seconds while searching for food.
