A Curve-billed Thrasher, with its mate, may proclaim territory by singing from perches at the perimeter, which can encompass several acres. A pair may occupy the same territory throughout their lives.

Bendire's and Curve-billed Thrashers have decurved bills, browner upperparts, and less spotted underparts. Juvenile Northern Mockingbird is also mostly gray with spotted underparts but it has white wing patches.

The iris is yellow to orange-yellow, differing slightly from the orange iris of the Curve-billed Thrasher. It has no distinct wing bars, while the Sage Thrasher has white wing bars on new feathers.

It is often confused with the similar Curve-billed Thrasher. The individual shown in the three shots shown here was near Salton City, Imperial Co., California, in November, 1993. The shots were taken with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/5.
