Deer generally have lithe, compact bodies and long, powerful legs suited for rugged woodland terrain. Deer are also excellent swimmers. Their lower cheek teeth have crescent ridges of enamel, which enable them to grind a wide variety of vegetation.

The Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is a common and widespread deer of the western United States and Canada. It may be found in a wide variety of habitats from rugged mountain terrain to costal forests to deserts.

The Sambar Deer, Cervus unicolor, is an introduced species found in wetlands on St. Vincent Island in Franklin County. It is much larger than the native white-tailed deer, reaching a length of 78-102".

Deer and people are living closer to each other because of human development and growth in deer and human populations. Because humans and deer often share a habitat, there can be problems for both of them.

Deer are native to much of the globe, with the exception of Australia (where they are not native, but have been introduced) and most of Africa. This is the most successful ungulate family presently in the Americas.

Deer mice are the prototype for "field mice" with large, bulging eyes, big ears, a bicolored pattern and a long tail. They are larger than the harvest mice (Reithrodontomys), but noticeably smaller than woodrats (Neotoma) and cotton rats (Sigmodon).

Deer have been a valuable resource in Michigan since the first Native Americans began to hunt them. Prior to European settlement, Michigan had an abundant deer herd in the south.

White-tailed deer have a wide range across various parts of North America. They can be found in southern Canadian provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Deer have considerable economic importance around the world. They are hunted for sport, for meat, and for their hides. Reindeer are important domestic animals in the far north. Several species have nearly been extirpated.

A deer called Schomburgk's deer, with spectacular antlers, was native to Thailand (then called Siam), and lived in swamps. They were hunted, but never in big enough quantities to cause extinction.
