Degu (Octodon degus) is a rodent at the family Octodontidea. It can be found in the South America, mostly in Chile, from the West coast to the Andes. It is very sociable animal and it is often keep as a pet.
A degu colony works together to protect itself from predators. When one animal detects danger, it warns the rest of the group with a vocal alarm call. It might also beat its tail on the ground in its excitement.

The typical genus is represented by the degu (Octodon degus) and several nearly related species; other genera being Ctenomys, Octodontomys (Neoctodon), Aconaemys, Spalacopus and Abrocoma; the latter taking its name from its unusually soft fur.
