Desert Bighorn Sheep
The Desert Bighorn Sheep formerly ranged in the Rocky Mountains from southern Canada to Colorado, but are now reduced to areas where small bands are protected by inaccessible habitat or by refuges.

 


However, desert bighorn sheep may rut for up to 9 months, with rutting reaching a peak in August and September [6].

Closer to home, many of our local desert bighorn sheep (federally endangered) have been vaccinated against diseases brought into their range by feral cattle.

The "Borrego" in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is Spanish for the wild desert bighorn sheep that inhabit its rocky cliffs and canyons. I was very lucky to happen upon a pair of bighorns meandering down Borrego Palm Canyon from the palm oasis.

Indeed, they have become so prosperous in America that it is feared they may start infringing on the habitat and resources of the indigenous desert bighorn sheep.

Staples Summer: grasses or sedges.
Winter: more woody plants, such as willow, sage and rabbit brush. Desert bighorn sheep eat brushy plants such as desert holly and desert cactus.
