Desert Iguana
Reptile. An adult desert iguana is large for a lizard, measuring head-to-tail 25-40 cm (10-16 in). The tail makes up 3/4 of the iguana's length! Active in daylight, desert iguanas change color to regulate body temperature.

A well-camouflaged desert iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis) peering out of its burrow in the sand. Tolerant of high temperatures, this lizard can be seen scurrying across sand hummocks and roads on hot, sunny days when most other lizards seek shelter.

The chuckwalla (Sauromalus obesus) and the desert iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis) are desert species of the SW United States and NW Mexico. The 16-in. long (40-cm), greenish chuckwalla is the largest U.S.
