Diamondback Water Snake

Animals Diamondback TerrapinDibatag

The diamondback water snake is our largest water snake. The record is 63 inches. The average size range that I have seen and collected is 3 - 5 feet and very stout. It is found throughout the state.

The Diamondback Water Snake is from the order Squamata. Species from this order are amphisbaenians, lizards or snakes. There are over 6,000 living species belonging to the squamata order - it is the largest order of all reptiles.

Breeding
Diamondback Water Snakes are ovoviviparous. They give birth to 20 or more live young in the late summer or early fall. Newborns are about 25cm at birth.

Diamondback Water Snakes are also the largest of the water snakes found in the Harris County area, and I have personally documented many specimens over four feet in length. In fact, the state record for this species is just over five feet long.
