Cats have been associated with man since the Ancient Egyptians first domesticated them approximately
5,000 years ago.

 


Domestic cats, no matter their breed, are all members of one species. Felis catus has had a very long relationship with humans. Ancient Egyptians may have first domesticated cats as early as 4,000 years ago.

Domestic cats are capable of living in feral and semi-feral states and have established substantial populations in areas where they are not native.

Cats have been domesticated since prehistoric times, perhaps for 5,000 years or more; there is evidence (from a Neolithic grave on Cyprus) of some sort of association with humans dating back to the 8th cent. B.C.

Cats (domestic cats) seem to date back to around ancient Egyptian times, when they were worshiped and heralded as sacred animals to the Gods in Egypt. The cat has since become an honored and valued member of family homes worldwide.

Today's domestic cats are generally believed to be descendants of the African Wild Cat, which were tamed by the Egyptians over 4000 years ago to control rats and mice raiding their granaries.

Wild cats interbreed easily with feral cats (domestic cats that fend for themselves in the wild) and hybrids (the results of a cross between a wild cat and a feral cat) will often produce a second litter in late summer.

The predatory behavior of a puma is very similar to the domestic cat. The puma will attempt to conceal itself for a surprise attack while stalking its prey. It will assume a crouched position with the tail twitching and the ears upright.

Cats (Felidae) are a diverse group of carnivores that includes domestic cats, lions, tigers, ocelots, jaguars, caracals, leopards, mountain lions, lynx and many other groups of cats.

About the size of a large domestic cat it is dark grey-brown above with white flecks and pale grey to buff below with red-tinged flanks and limbs.

The causes of the hirola's drastic decline from 1976 to 1978 are unknown, although competition with domestic cattle had been suggested.
