While most domestic ducks descend from the mighty Mallard, the other barnyard duck is the much maligned Muscovy. Actually, this lean, hardy bird has lots of fans in kitchens and at tables all over the world.

Ducks have many economic uses, being farmed for their meat, eggs, feathers, (particularly their down). They are also kept and bred by aviculturists and often displayed in zoos.

Mallard ducks are the ancestors of almost all other varieties of domestic ducks.
The male mallard duck is also called a drake.
About 19% of duck mating pairs are male/male couples.

Like most domestic ducks, the Indian Runner is a series developed from the wild mallard. It can be a variety of colors including black, white, chocolate, Cumberland blue, fawn, mallard, white, and trout.

The Pekin Duck is the duck most people think of when they imagine what a domestic duck looks like. For this reason they are often called simply, the Domestic Duck, by many people. The most famous Pekin Duck is of course, Donald Duck.

The mallard is the ancestor of almost all breeds of domestic ducks. It breeds with feral domestic ducks. The offspring of these mismatched pairs exhibit a wide-variety of color patterns.

Many Mallard in the East are of domestic origin or have bred with domestic ducks. This interbreeding has caused a high degree of variation in Mallard plumage. The female Mallard would be more easily confused with other species than the male.

In particular, surveillance should include domestic ducks, since it is known they can carry the virus asymptomatically and infection in them could therefore easily pass undetected.

The domestic ducks are dabblers too. They are descendents of the Mallards. Dabbling ducks take off from the water in quick jumps. Ducks with longer necks dive with their head down into the shallow water and pick up their food.

The population in Florida is thought to be the result of released and escaped domestic ducks that have hybridized with native ducks. They are the most common waterfowl found in suburban areas.

Mallard Duck
The Mallard is a common wild duck that is the ancestor of most domestic ducks. Or go to a simple version of the duck printout (unlabeled diagram and no information).
