Double-crested cormorants make their home on the coasts and on inland waters. They feed almost exclusively on fish. After diving underwater for a meal, they surface, flip the fish in the air, and swallow it head-first.

The double-crested cormorant nests in colonies. Both the male and female will build a nest of sticks, twigs and seaweed. Nests are built in trees and shrubs and on the ground of rocky cliffs and islands. The female lays three to five eggs.

The Double-crested Cormorant breeds from late December through October, peaking from early March to mid-June. Cormorants are colonial nesters. The male and female build a nest of sticks, twigs, and seaweed in trees or shrubs.

The crests of the Double-crested Cormorant are rarely seen. Great Cormorants are occasionally seen in coastal areas.

The double-crested cormorant of the Atlantic coast, Brandt's cormorant of the Pacific coast, and the red-faced cormorant, Phalacrocorax urile, are common forms. The glossy black European cormorant is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere.

Double-crested Cormorants have straight orange gular areas that are dark-bordered. Immature Double-cresteds have white chests and dark bellies, the opposite of the immature Great Cormorant.

Similar Species: Double-crested Cormorant: under parts are not clean white. Common Loon: shorter, stocky neck. Eared, Homed and Red-necked grebes: much smaller.

Depending on the season - and with reasonable luck -- you can see a Double-crested Cormorant, an Osprey, a Golden Eagle or a Bald Eagle.
