Short-billed Dowitchers thrust their long bills deep into mud or sand, and pump in a rhythmic, up and down motion that is often compared to a sewing machine.

Status Rare transient. A bird collected on Sable Island and labelled 4 October 1897 was identified as this species by Pitelka (1950).

The Short-billed Dowitcher is nearly identical in appearance to its cousin, the Long-billed Dowitcher. The Short-billed strongly prefers coastal habitats in most seasons, however, while the Long-billed prefers fresh-water habitats.

Characteristics The long-billed dowitcher is 11-12 inches in length. It has a long, straight black bill; long, green legs; a white lower back and rump and white eyebrows.

The Eastern dowitcher, also called Robin Snipe, red breasted snipe , are all commonly found on mud flats and shores, so does the long billed dowitcher of West North America and South America ( rare on the Atlantic coast ) .

Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus. Common in spring and fall, and occasional in winter in Gulf Coast region. In other regions, rare in fall and early winter, and occasional in spring and late summer.

The Short-billed Dowitcher is common along the coasts and may be found at inland lakes and marshes in winter. It forages by stabbing its bill into the mud.

Those that remain are easily missed by casual birders like me, as they blend in with larger flocks of similar looking shorebirds like Dowitchers. Right now some Red Knots are passing along the coast, having largely molted into breeding plumage.

American Woodcock has a plain, buffy breast, rounded wings and a distinctive head pattern. Dowitchers are similar in size and shape but lack prominent crown and back stripes, and have a white rump and barred tail.

Remarks It bears some resemblance to the Lesser Yellowlegs, but when first seen it is more likely to be confused with the Short-billed Dowitcher, with which it often associates.
