The Darner Dragonfly eats mosquitoes and other flying insects. It uses its legs to form a little basket for snaring its prey. These aerial acrobats are amazing hunters, since 80% of their brains are used for vision.

The Emperor dragonfly, Anax imperator, pictured on the front of this factsheet, has the largest wingspan of any British dragonfly - 10.5cm, and a body length of up to 8cm.

Dragonfly studies in the United States are in their infancy, as the study of birds was a century ago.

A dragonfly and a damselfly are both insects.
They have 2 wings on each side.
Their wings are clear.
When they fly, they can stay in one spot in the air.

The dragonfly is an insect characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body.

In 1983 a dragonfly was collected in Illinois, but could not be readily identified. In 1987 Tim Vogt saw the specimen, and realized that it was a Hine's Emerald Dragonfly.

Most of a dragonfly's brain is dedicated to processing and responding to what they see. Their complex eyes provide nearly 360-degree vision. Dragonflies can hover like a helicopter. They can exchange oxygen through specially adapted anal chambers.

Just as the name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly eat insects, especially bees, wasps and ants, which are caught in the air by sorties from an open perch.

The following day, the back of the larva's thorax splits and the dragonfly begins to push itself out of the old skin.

Predators of Cane Toad tadpoles in Australia include dragonfly nymphs, water beetles, Saw-shelled Turtles and Keelback Snakes. Keelbacks also eat young toads; laboratory tests have shown that they can tolerate low levels of toad toxins.

Their diet regularly includes: snakes, fish, small turtles, mice, young waterfowl, crayfish, diving beetles, dragonfly larvae, spiders and other invertebrates (Albright 1999).

The Western Pondhawk (Erythemis collocata) is indeed a predator, but of the dragonfly sort. The male seen here is a beautiful soft blue, while the female is light green. We saw many of them on a Rich Stallcup walk around Five Brooks recently.

Tadpoles are so low on the totem pole that dragonfly larvae and other predatory insects frequently make a meal of them.

Some aquariums, like the Georgia Marine Aquarium, encourage a lady bug or dragonfly release instead of having balloon releases to celebrate special events. They are available
in quantity from biological supply catalogs.

One tiny traveller was so hungry it engaged a large dragonfly in the air. It was then towed by the insect before releasing it undamaged! ...

Diet: Carnivore. They like to eat crayfish, water beetles, snails and dragonfly larvae. The also eat fish, small turtles, young water birds, and even other frogs! ...

Yellow-bellied sliders are omnivorous, however, juveniles tend to be more carnivorous than adults. Aquatic insects, such as dragonfly larvae are consumed in the wild, as well as crayfish and snails.

What eats fish: Other fish, birds (e.g. pelicans, cormorants and herons), snakes, turtles, crustaceans, some insect larvae (e.g. dragonfly larvae), and humans.

The tadpoles, which are not protected by any poison, often fall prey to snakes and dragonfly larvae.

Adult striped crayfish snakes feed primarily on hard-shelled crayfish but juvenile also eat odonate (dragonfly) naiads or seasonally abundant shrimp in some areas.

It might belong into this genus or a closely related one (Becker 1987). In any case, the genus name Sushkinia is invalid for this animal because it had already been allocated to a prehistoric dragonfly relative.

On June 9, 2002 a bird was found in the marshes in the center of the Main Ring. July 23, 2006, produced the first breeding record for the species when an adult was seen feeding two chicks with crayfish and dragonfly nymphs at Lake Logo.

Also moving by at sea were small numbers of the highly migratory Spot-winged Glider dragonfly. Again, who knows where they were headed?
