DESCRIPTION: The general coloration is gray, tan or brown above. Juveniles may have pairs of light oval to rhombic dorsal patches outlined with black.

Northern Dusky Salamanders are variable in color and pattern. They usually have a reddish-brown, wavy bordered stripe down the back. Their belly is cream-colored and usually sprinkled with gray or brown flecks.

Common near running or trickling water in wooded areas. Found under leaf litter or other debris. May enter burrows for protection. Lays eggs close to water under logs or along streambanks.

Dusky Salamander - Desmognathus fuscus
Description: 2 1/2 - 5 1/2" (6.4 - 11.5 cm). Distinct pale line from eye to jaw angle. Tail is keeled an triangular. Gray to brown in color and may be plain or mottled.

The Spotted Dusky Salamander, Desmognathus fuscus, near small streams in the panhandle and in Marion and Polk Counties. It has a brown golden-spotted body and mottled underside. It may reach a length of 3.5".

Note: Dusky Salamanders (genus Desmognathus) are extremely difficult to identify due to their highly varied patterns and coloration.
