Dwarf mongooses mainly eat insects, including locusts, termites, beetles and grubs. Adults cooperate in hunting and often share food, including carrying insects back to their young.

Ranging in size from the 7-inch-long (18-centimeter-long) dwarf mongoose to the 2-foot-long (60-centimeter-long) Egyptian mongoose; these sleek mammals have long bodies with short legs and tapered snouts.

Lives in burrows; it may dig these itself or use old termite nests. Sometimes will share its home with a dwarf mongoose or a snake. They also live in cracks in small rocky mounds. Lays 2-4 large, oval eggs in moist soil.

Its claws couldn't retract, and it probably spent most of its time on the ground rather than in trees, like these dwarf mongooses. It lived from 17 million to 5.3 million years ago, -- basically all through the Miocene.
