Eagle Owls look very much like the Great Horned Owl, but are much bigger birds. They are large owls with prominent ear tufts that are usually not raised upright.

Milky Eagle Owl (Bubo lacteus)
The Milky Eagle Owl is found in lightly wooded areas near rivers and lakes in Africa south of the Sahara desert. The Milky Eagle Owl's main prey is small to medium sized mammals and birds.

Eagle Owls have also been observed living in European cities. Since 2005, at least five couples have nested in Helsinki.

Eurasian Eagle Owl Bubo bubo and Verreaux's Eagle Owl B. lacteus, which may reach 76.2 cm (30 in) long, have a wingspan of just over 2 m (6.6 ft), and weigh about 4 kg (almost 9 lb).

The GHO is found throughout the US and Canada, and is related to the Eagle Owl of Eurasia. In fact "Bubo" is latin for Eagle Owl. A formidable predator, it will take just about any mammal around smaller than a deer.

Other than human persecution, they have few predators, although large owls such as the Eurasian Eagle Owl and the Great Horned Owl will kill smaller species if the opportunity arises.

Genus: Bubo (BEW-boh) is from the Latin word meaning "owl" or from the Greek word for "eagle owl" used by the great 1st century Roman naturalist Pliny (Gaius Plinius Secundus). Great horned owls are related to the eagle owl of Eurasia.
