Eared Grebe
Podiceps nigricollis
The Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) breeds across much of the western United States and southern Canada and winters in the southern United States, predominately the west, as well as into Mexico.

Eared Grebes are a fairly common grebe in the state, more so than the similar Horned Grebe. They are a very gregarious bird, often breeding in very large colonies, and often migrating together in huge flocks.

Eared Grebes are common to abundant in the Weaselhead/Glenmore area during spring and fall migration periods.

Eared Grebe: Small grebe with black upperparts, dark chestnut-brown flanks, and white underparts. Head and neck are black with orange feathers on face. Eyes are red. Sexes are similar.
