The Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus) is a common, small, rodent of woodlands, parks, and suburbs in the eastern half of the United States and Canada. It is the only chipmunk species native to the eastern U.S.

The Eastern chipmunk is a very cute little animal. It is a ground-dwelling squirrel about 5-6 inches long and weighing about 3 ounces. It is a brownish-red color.
EASTERN CHIPMUNK
The eastern chipmunk spends much of the winter its burrow, sleeping for up to 8 days at a time. It is not a true hibernator, as it will awaken to dig into its hidden supply of nuts and seeds, stored during the summer and fall.
Range The eastern chipmunk can be found in southeastern Canada and most of the northeastern United States south to Mississippi and Virginia and west to North Dakota and Oklahoma.
Life History: The eastern chipmunk has two breeding seasons per year, but not all will be successful or attempt it twice. The first breeding cycle begins in February or March and ends in April.
For the ancestors of the eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) there was no place like home, even if that meant sticking it out through the last ice age.

Look for eastern chipmunks in woods and parks of the eastern half of the continental United States. Chipmunks are actually omnivores and will eat small birds and eggs if they can find them.
Eastern bluebird nestlings were killed and partially eaten by an eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) [38]. Red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) kill adult eastern bluebirds and rob eggs.

The eastern chipmunk is larger than most of the western species, reaching 10 inches (with tail) and weighing a mighty 2-4 ounces.
The body of the common Eastern chipmunk, Tamias striatus, is about 5 to 6 in. (13-15 cm) long; the upper parts are reddish brown or grayish brown with a median black stripe and two black stripes separated by a whitish band along each side.
